We've visited Lake Garda several times in the past few years, but we've never visited Sirmione. We stopped last night at Camping Tiglio just a few kilometres along the road. We had intended to carry on towards Croatia today, but it seemed daft not to visit the old city while we were here. So this morning we set off on our bikes to Sermione.

We crossed into the old town by the bridge, and having looked at some nice Italian handbags, we set off round the panoramic trail which takes you around the head off the peninsula.

There is a thermal spring which bubbles up just off the edge of the rocks, which attracts bathers, and you can buy an icecream to keep you going.

It was a long walk but eventually we made it back to the town square.

Having been nearly run down by a trio of shiny red cars!

We then decided to take a boat trip which took us back around the headland.

Passing the old Roman Spa.

and back under the bridge to our starting point.

We then cycled back to our campsite where Cath finished her day with a swim.

Sounds like a lovely day.  Better than one at the coalface that I've enjoyed :(

The Romans certainly knew how to live in style! I wonder what the temperature of the water is in the hot springs? Thanks again, so interesting seeing the photos.

This was a very good postcard for us. We have never been to the Lakes and Sharon fancied it next May. The photos give a real picture of what the area is like and perhaps we shall follow in your wheels when we go. Are you off to Krk for a swim? Regards, Roy

From our boat we could see the hot gases bubbling up from the lake bed, where the underground well was tapped 120 years ago. It now feeds a modern spa and baths (very expensive). The Roman spa was one the biggest buildings in Italy.

We arrived this afternoon in Cres, Roy: Krk to follow.
