The insurance on my motorhome was due for renewal and I checked what was available elsewhere as my current insurer had increased their cost by more than £95.00. I eventually decided on a new provider and completed an application form both on line and on the telephone because I was concerned they were classing it as "car insurance". I was assured my motorhome would be the subject of the insurance and I awaited the policy documents in the post. Having received the documents I set about reading the policy and accompanying booklet. The first thing I noticed was the post code of where the vehicle would be kept was my home; this was incorrect as it is kept on a CaSSOA Gold storage site. I rang the insurers and was asked why it was not kept at my home address to which I replied that it would not fit on my drive. Some minutes later I was assured by them the address where it was stored would not be a problem. Having sorted that out I continued to read the rest of the booklet only to discover I was not covered if my vehicle had cooking facilities fitted, on top of that I was not covered for Hazardous Goods being carried i.e. LPG cylinders. I rang the insurance company again to query what I had discovered only to be told the insurance would be invalid if a fire were to be caused by the cooking equipment. I was then questioned what cooking equipment was in the vehicle and who had carried out the conversion, I replied the manufacturer had. I was then asked to get a valuation regarding the cost of the conversion; at that point I requested a cancellation of the policy. So check the wording of your policy, ALL of it, as you will never know what you are NOT covered for unless you do –especially by the company whose adverts have a long thin red line in them!
