Why tell the world you have won £33 million?

Can anyone understand the logic behind announcing to  the World via TV and press that you won the  big lottery? Have they not just set themselves up for potential kidnapping?

I would have said nothing to anybody and in six months time admitted to close relatives that we had won 1.5 million

Not something I would announce to the world, not sure about friends and family
Wink.  Nice to win enough to have a good backstop and money for kids and grandkids and possiibly good friends, but do you admit how much?  How do
you then mantain friendships etc when those around you are aware of your win?  Do they stay friends for what else there maybe?  If you were used to going away with friends/family would they still be able to go or would they expect you to pay.  Quite a double
edged sword really. Surprised  Not one I'm likely to have to hold as we don't do the lottery and ERNIE has forgotten I've got any numbers
    Undecided

Pressure from Camelot I'm sure.  For a northerner, £1.5 million would be nice wouldn't it?  Wink

I suspect its Hobson's Choice. Ideally you would keep quiet about it but because of the size of the win the press would move heaven and earth to uncover the identity of the winners. If they were discovered in that way they are bound to be less kind to them
than an official announcement as it happened.

I have extended family who are in the same position as you.  I begrudge you not.  But a little more spreading it around would be nice

They live in a small town, very difficult to keep quiet if they suddenly start buying new homes etc but I think I'd try not to speak to the press. Not much chance of that win happening to any of us .....anyone going for the next big pay out on Friday?! Wink

    They are lonely

Write your comments here...Not anymore they're not. They'll have loads of friends even some they may have known before the win.

That's because he remembered me today. How much Learjet can you get for twenty five quid?

I think the sad thing about a mega win is that the recipient, in order to avoid the begging letter/freeloader/ sick aunty operation problem is to break with old acquaintances and they end up moving in totally new circles. As I've posted before, creates as
    many problems as it solves.

A fortune teller once told me that I'd never be rich, but I would always be comfortable, although I would have to earn every penny.  As the years go by I feel I need to take issue with her definition of comfortable, though! I did once win a yoghurt maker
in a tombola. I'm fairly certain that this publicity dilemma will never be mine... Don't cry

It's the thought of the tax I'd be paying on the invested money that would upset me.  Even at 1% return it would be around £150k per year.

In todays paper it seems they are going to help out with the local flood victims, nice to hear.

Last night OH and me talked about what we would do if we won that amount of money, we didn't get much further than about 5 millionFrown the rest
we decided would have to be given away. With that in mind we feel that these huge payouts would be better spread out among the other winners, ie 5 numbers etc. that way giving more people a nice win.
