Hi all

Just thought we would start this thread to find out when people started caravaing. Allthough I originally started with my family, I didn't caravan on my own untill 2009.

Both myself and my wife are in our early 30's and are allready on our second caravan. We often find we are the youngest caravaners on site, and get very jealous when we meet other caravaners on 4/5 week tours and we have to go back to work on monday !! ( apparently it helps pay for some of their pensions so we've been told on numerious occasions) we will get there one day.

In the past 3 years we have now given up going abroad and are having great fun exploring britian in our caravan but 4 weeks holiday just isn't enough !!

Started in 1990. Tried a weeks holiday in Norfolk, then took off on a trip to Austria (non EC country then) near the Hungary border (Communist country still in those days )without a word of German and having to change 4 different currencies. No problems! Back at work after 3 weeks of absolute bliss. Mind you we get excited taking the van 20 miles down the road.

Glad you're enjoying our hobby. Doesn't matter how far you go as long as you're away from the day to day grind.

Why are we replying (for the first time!) to a question that was asked 5 years ago? undecided

We were not all on this forum 5 years ago. The OP has given the present posters the opportunity to discuss this topic.

Sorry Biggarmac and Volvoman I obviously haven't made myself clear.

How has a question that was first posted 5 years ago (with no replies then) suddenly reappeared?

Sometime in the early 80's, I had a Suzuki Vitara short wheel base 1.6l engine and borrowed father in laws ABI Marauder. Towing with the Suzuki frequently put me in second gear on some hills with a frantic change into third leaving me with a dying engine, only to return into second gear again.

But it kept my interest and we bought our own caravan the following year, also changing the car to a Suzuki Grand Vitara with a 2.5l v6 engine.

We progressed and our interest grew year after year, eventually on early retirement going abroad each year.

It's a forum, so what is wrong in talking on a subject that hasn't aged. If I had posted this today I would get the same replies, much better than your moaning posts.

We started in 1976 with a Sprite Alpine. The only new van we have ever bought (with the help of my in laws). It was a small four berth, but we managed with three children - one in the very thin hammock like bunk, and two top to toe below.

Forty one years on there are two oldies in a large twin axle.

    Still as much fun.

We started some 33 years ago with a 10 ft Piper. You got  four beds, one double a single and a bunk plus a toilet area in this think although there was no heating, a foot operated water pump and lighting was one strip light powered by the car battery and a gas mantle.

We kept it two years before a third child meant a bigger caravan and are now on our sixth. The oddity being now there are only two of us we have the largest caravan we have ever had. We were members of the C&CC as before the caravan we had a frame tent and have now been CC members for over 29 years.

After a wet and cold camping trip in August 1999. We were in a tent in August in the middle of a field shivering while all around were these caravans with a lovely warm glow coming from their windows. We bought a Crown Sceptre (made by Elldis?) caravan the next week. Compared to today's models it was basic, no blown air heating but had a heater with hot water and an inside toilet. Compared to a tent it was luxury.  Never looked back.

My C&CC membership card shows 44 years and we were vanning for a couple of years before we joined them.

I think Dave was referring to some of your posts elsewhere.

He did say 'moaning posts' which is plural - if you know what plural is. 🙄

We started in 1974 with a Sprite 400 which we pulled with a Mk1 VW Golf. We had to give up for a while in the late 1980s when my OH  had a back problem. We bought our first brand new caravan when I took early retirement in 1998, an Abbey Domino , and have had a caravan since then.

We started in 2000.  Absolutely hated touring caravans up until then, but a friend invited us in to their Swift Challenger and I was surprised how nice it was.  The seed was sown and within 6 months we had purchased our own van, and never looked back.  Over the next 14 years we worked our way through 4 different vans before changing to a motorhome.  We probably would never have visited some of the most beautiful parts of this country had we not been caravanning.

Always best to make a post and its intentions clear in the text without the need for emoticons. By all means add them as a reinforcement. Not everyone will share an individual's humour or meaning or be on the same wavelength, that's just human nature?
