Cirencester site - walk into town (closed)

We're hoping to stay at Cirencester next month and wondered  how easy it is now to get down into town. Last time we went ( acouple of years ago) the small gate into Cirencester park and had been shut (possibly to stop students from the college using it)
 and we had to walk farther down the main road.
