I will be spending a week on the Alderstead Heath Caravan site near to Croydon, and will be visiting the capital a few times.  My OH is retired and therefore has a bus pass, I've retired, but not old enough to get any passes, etcWink,
so have been looking at an Oyster Card as I can use it, apparently, on any public transport.  Is it ok for as far as Croydon and is it worth using?

The good thing about the pay as you go Oyster card over a contactless credit card, is that there is a daily cap above which you will not be charged. The size of the cap depends on the maximum zone you travel in. However, I think the caps are separate for
    train/tube and bus.

Just a point about using National Bus passes on London buses. Outside of London it seems to be the norm to scan the bus pass on entering the bus if the bus has that facility. However when we were at Abbey Wood and got the bus to Greenwich it seemed to confuse the driver when we tried to scan the pass, so on the second trip we just showed the pass to the driver and left the decision on whether it should be scanned to him. Pensioners in London have a Freedom Pass which works like an Oyster Card but without the cost!!!

Can OH's national bus pass be ok to use within London.  I know he can use it anywhere in the UK, but London seems to be in a little world of its ownLaughing - just checked about Freedom Pass - you need to live in a London borough, so that's out as we live in Manchester

Used mine as well, frequently, without any problem, was on the crystal palace site at the time. Waived onto bus rather than scanned on most occasions.

Some "foreign" ie other counties bus passes tend to not work outside your own area, our friends Notts passes never work here and ours work on some Cambs buses but not others, its never been a problem ,as drivers just wave you on,

If you are not of a "certain age" for travel in london an oyster card is the way to go as it gives "cheaper" travel than a ticket per journey, and if you are wanting to get anywhere "quicker" use the Underground

...Ps with an Oyster card you have to "tap in" at the start of your journey and make sure you "tap out" when you get off or you will be charged extra on your card, that includes buses, a few station do not have barriers ,but you still need to "tap in" and
"tap out"look for Yellow Pads may be mounted on the walls near entry/exit  if not sure watch the "locals",also on most Underground stations it will show close to the tap pad the the cost of the journey you have just made and how much is left on your card,

There are no longer any ticket offices but staff are always around to assist with either purchase or top ups

I've read up about this.  Although it does state that on buses alone, you only tap once on entering and advised not to tap on exit as you may incur a penalty.  This does not apply to any other form of transportUndecided

Write your comments here...wrong info from my advise then it must have changed (not that we have used london buses with an oyster as we are of a certain age)

Oyster can be used on all London Transport Buses and Trams (at bus rates) only tap in. If you go to Wimbledon from Croydon by tram read station instructions very carefully or you will end up paying the tube rate. Bus Passes from outside London only need
to be shown to driver. Good value max charge is around £4 for a days travel on as many buses as you like the only drawback can be in some parts and times of the day its quicker to walk!

There is a daily max in London for tubes/trains and a lesser one for busses. I think a mix of the two would mean using the tube/train max. The contactless card system also lets you benefit from this max I think. The benefit of having an Oyster card for me is that they are not scanning your debit cards all the time so I think it is less of a risk of someone getting your card details by foul means and the Oyster card system lets you check your travel & see that you have not been overcharged etc. should you wish to do that. Regards, Roy
