Dashboard ignition clicking on

We're on our 1st trip in our van and all is good apart from one thing - at random times the van's dashboard panel lights up and you can hear a whirring sound for no apparent reason. This lasts for a couple of seconds of so then goes off again. It sounds
like its coming from the vans bonnet area. Any ideas would be most appreciated.
