Isn't food heavy!

I confess that I've never used a weighbridge but I do have an inventory of every item that lives in the van together with its weight. This runs all the way from 'Leisure Battery 17.7 kg' down to '4 egg cups 0.04 kg' and includes tea/coffee/sugar and toiletries.
I always drain the water system before a journey so, by my reckoning I have around 40kg 'spare' for clothes and food. This seems reasonable until you realise how heavy food is.

Take for example the basic 'first night' survival rations described below:

2 litre bottle of water

2 pints of milk

1 carton of fruit juice

box of cereal

loaf of bread

2 tins of baked beans (or whatever)

small tub of margarine/spread

jar of marmalade

bottle of wine

By my calculations this little lot weighs 8kg, i.e. one fifth of my spare load allowance. Tempting as it is to stock the van with food before a holiday I have come to realise I need to shop on arrival …. or carry the food in the car.
