Waterproofing and repairing an old Awning

Managed to try out the second hand awning that came with our van this morning. We have been using the porch awning till now, but a longer holiday will require a bigger awning. Its seems OK, there is a small tear in the roof, found it then lost it again,
its about 1/4 to 1/8 of an inch. So how can this be patched up with ease and more over whilst we have yet to test it in rain. If we need to re proof it, can we, how is this done and what do we use, in particular to the roof.
