I’m not inclined to make a contribution while they pay such high salaries to certain individuals. They do not appear to understand the value of money.

This benefit should be paid by the Government, they swapped the liability for it, to have a Dig at the BBC.whom they hate. They would much rather us be paying our 145 quid a year to their mate.....that Crook Rupert Murdoch , the phone hacking king.Would I give up a free TV licence ?  I don't know, 5 years is a long time (I'm  only 70) but at 75 I think I'll  have earn it. So ,no.   But that doesn't mean that I begrudge the BBC an income stream, to keep them  Free to Air.

But the Government should be paying Pensioner Benefits not a broadcasting company.

I think that any funding should come from general taxation. That way, those who can afford to will contribute more, at whatever age. It would also avoid the need to prosecute those who don’t buy licences.

How would you define "Those who can afford it" though?   Will it be payment for those of us who have looked after our money and free licenses ( and everything else!) for those who have spent every penny all their lives?

Isn't it just speculation at the moment? One of those ideas put out there to guage what the reaction's likely to be?

We don't qualify for a few years yet, but, no I wouldn't give it up although I'd probably donate an equal sum to charity.

For me the worying thing is that some genuinely hard up pensioners would be "guilt tripped" into giving it up, even though it may be an important link to the outside world for them; I can just imagine my 89 year old Dad, living on his own, doing just that!

Sad. Use left and right arrows to navigate.

My thoughts are that too much effort is being spent running the licence system, yet almost all of us have a television. If the BBC needs to continue to exist, it should be funded from general taxation. Whist some pensioners may be cash-rich and able to make
a contribution, others are not so fortunate. Taxation collects (or tries to) in proportion to individuals’ ability to pay, so would address that inequality.

As most of us watch non BBC programmes on our telly why should we be paying anyway. Its a cheek to ask us to forgo a perk whilst the elite live on perks -particularly the top dogs and their entourages at the BBC

In my opinion TV licenses should not be taken away! It's the thin end of the wedge

I watch very little non-BBC content, and no other News channels, So, do not begrudge my 145 pound a year licence fee.Think it it is money well spent, so as not to have to watch stupid adverts. Even  subscription channels like SKY(spit) still have adverts.
    Thank goodness for the BBC.

If you think that overpaid executives are only in the BBC then you are in cloud cuckoo land. Think Murdoch and crew.

Was it perhaps a case of Mr Osborne looking for a way to do away with the 'pensioner perk' without getting the adverse publicity, knowing that the BBC would probably eventually do their dirty work for them.

I've just noticed on another thread that it's been reported the Beeb have increased Mary Berry's salary to £600,000 a year. I wonder if she'll forego her free licence? Wink

The whole tv licence setup should be scrapped. The BBC should stand on its own feet and then it might stop paying so called stars such idiotic salaries with licence money. The BBC is just a gravy train.More people each year are now refuseing too pay for a
tv licence. Its an outdated concept and long past its sell by.

I don't really understand why people of 75 and over actually get free TV licences. I could understand if it were restricted to pensioners on a basic state pension but otherwise I think they should be scraped. Unfortunately its one of those things that have
been given in the past and , I suspect, almost impossible to take away. One solution might be to announce that anyone currently get the benefit would keep it but no new free licences would be given. I say all this as someone who in five years will benefit
but equally I am a great fan of the BBC and I would prefer to do without it rather than the BBC having to compromise on quality.

War & Peace, Dickensian, Largest Dinosaur in the World, Only Connect, University Challenge, Winterwatch, Masterchef ... need I add more?

Yes, the Beeb shows a lot of repeats if you're a daytime TV addict, but compared to the rubbish offerred on the commercial alternatives, I'd say they'd got a pretty good record really.

(Still wouldn't be turning down my free licence though!)

Write your comments here...it is not law or compulsory yet   The news report which I have been following for awhile , is those that be at the BBC have been in a number of meeting's with the government putting foward this idea as they need to raise their
revenue by rather a lot and government won't give them the o k to raise the TV licience, so no need to panick yet Hosta , personally I don't believe there are enough over 75s not paying the t v licience  to make up many millions of £ the beeb are expecting
    to raise

We watch a lot of BBC programmes, prefer them to the commercial channels. We don't have Sky we have Freeview, we would prefer to pay a subscription to BBC (rather than license) for an encoded system that we could receive when we are away.
