Battery Chargers

I recently was foolish enough to leave my van for a few days with the master switch on and the heater fan still running at tick over. This obviously flattened the battery but when I connected the 240V system to the van, it blew the battery charger fuse.
I checked the battery and although very low voltage was fine, so I removed the battery charger (an easy job in my Coachman) to check separately.

I then found that a 20 amp hour battery had been fitted protected by a 15 amp fuse which in my opinion is about as foolish as one can get. What had happened was that the battery being very flat, the charger tried to work at its full capacity, but the fuse
would not allow it. A little bit like having a cooker in your housr set with a 20 amp fuse, so it works fine as long as you do not put on the oven!!

A very poor design by Coachman in my opinon, and a warning to others who may syuufer the same.
