Water tank cleaning confusion

I am confused about the methods of cleaning water tanks on a motorhome. Several threads have suggested using Milton or similar and this was my first thought. However, the latest MMM has an article on cleaning and quotes Eldiss as saying that you should not
use Milton or other chlorine based cleaners that could damage stainless tank linings. Globecar suggest you should not use vinegar based products which may damage the seals.

On Thursday we are picking up our new (to us) 3 year old van and I have no idea when the tank was cleaned last - either way I still need to do it.

Does anyone have experience of using brewers cleaner/steriliser as suggested on other forums (fora?????) Naturally the tank will not be used for drinking.
