Winter charging of vehicle battery in situ?
I'd like to leave a smart charger permanently connected to our motorhome engine battery, in situ, to provide a maintenance charge to keep it topped up over winter,
However, both the base vehicle manual (Boxer) and smart charger manual say to disconnect the engine battery from the vehicle before connecting the external charger. What are the reasons for this? I have often in the past charged car batteries in situ with no problems.
The motorhome's built in Sargeant battery charger can be switched to charge the engine battery, but as is the case with all such chargers, it does not fully charge the battery, cutting off at around 13.6 volts.
I could disconnect the engine battery, but then the alarm system will be turned off, and that's an insurance no-no.
