LED Lights

Has anyone tried retrofitting LED lights?  Is it simply a case of disconnecting the old fittings and replacing them with LED fittings?  What difference does it make to battery life?  Are they as bright as the old lights?  I would be interested in hearing
the experience of people who have made the change.
