Carbon monoxide alarm gone off

and I'm not sure what to do.  It just woke me up.  Proper alarm rather than just a low battery chirp and the alarm light is flashing.

however I don't think I have anything gas running.  Am connected to ehu.  The Heafter will have been coming on overnight but this will be on electric won't it?  The only thing ive used gas for was cooking dinner six hours ago.

i don't have a headache, the dog is still alive!

I've pressed the big test/reset button and the alarm stopped but alarm light is still flashing.  Ive tried holding it down to test it and I can't get an audible test alarm, is it not working properly?

Ive taken it outside and it stopped.  Brought it back in and it hasn't gone off again.  The red alarm light has stopped flashing and if I press the test button it now beeps.

So I feel a bit happier that I'm not about to die.

should I try and find someone to check the caravan tomorrow (today) or be reassured that it's not going off now?

are you OK?, turn off the gas and get it checked over as soon as possible ,you can't be too carefull with gas , it went off for a reason ,and you need to find out if it was a faulty co alarm or a fault with the gas

please give us an up date

you weren't using any gas but (as HD says) was the gas cylinder turned off? actually at the cylinder itself? You could have a leak somewhere in the pipes from the bottle?

I'm paranoid about gas I only use it for cooking and only turn the cylinder on at the time we actaully use it.

I hope all is ok.  i thought you needed a separate detector for gas leaks?  Isn't Carbon monoxide detector just for fumes?  Fridge vents blocked?  Or the heater flue?

Have you got a vent cover gas outlet, and forgotten to remove the cover.

just remebered a thread about truma combi heaters giving off a plastic burnt smell when they cool down, truma says this is normal and nothing to worry about. It happens to us occasionally but has never set the alarm off. You get could a mobile caravan engineer
in or get a cheap fan heater from a local supermarket.

Hope all is ok this morning, our previous caravan fridge switch could easily be knocked accidentally from electric to gas, everything needs to be checked just in case.

    I'm still alive!

no cars or other caravans near me.  Am at the Borrowdale club site.  Anyone know a good caravan engineer near keswick who works weekends?  I'm going into town next to see if I can find anywhere that sells alarms and buy another one.

Everything was definitely on electric and not gas, I double checked.  Didn't turn the gas cylinder off as according to google Co alarms don't pick up gas, only CO.   Have turned the heating back on now and waiting to see if it alarms again.

Hi Pippah, you don't say how old the detector is because they only have a life expectancy of 5-7 years although some manufacturers say upto 10. As they get older the detector heads get contaminated this is a normal occurance, so it could just be down to
its age and I suppose the safest way to find out would be to replace it. Just going slightly off topic but still with detectors this time smoke/fire detectors, how many people are aware of the different types there are heat detectors which as the name implies
respond to change in temp, optical which sees the changes in the air and ionisation which sort of smells the air. Are you still at Poolsbrook, if your really stuck I only live  around 15mins away so I could pop down if needed.

Jumbo that is so kind but the OP is Philippa whereas I am Pippa H and sadly didn't get to Poolsbrook.  I have been helping sick family.

I think she is wise to try for a new alarm I hope I have written the date on the back of mine.  B&Q do them and big chains Good luck Philippa.

The alarm we have in the van just alarms at a set level. Whereas the one we have at home shows ppm on a LCD, when I open our solid fuel room heater it indicates a few ppm well below the alarm level. I think when I replace the one in the van I will use one
of these, although about twice the price. Any CO alarm is serious, but at least the LCD gives you an indication of the scale of the problem and shows the figure reducing as you ventilate.

Personally, I would either get another alarm immediately and keept he van well vented till you double check it or get the caravan checked out by someone.  What is the point of having them if we don't respond to them??  I know it's a real hassle that you don't need but they are there to keep us safe and save lives. Good Luck.x

I am with Tracey. The alarms are cheap so buy another and see if that goes off and if so you need the problem investigated by a professional but it does sound as though the alarm is suspect.f

Just to be clear Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a product of combustion or rather a product of poor combustion where the fuel Carbon (C) remains un-burnt. If you have no combustion in you van from gas heater, from fridge or other gas powered appliance you can't
possibly have CO present in your van. The detector must be faulty. Leaking gas would not be a source of CO.

Right well I bought a second monitor and that alarmed.  Ive now disconnected the gas cylinder but was still confused as to how im getting CO.  I can't find a mobile caravan person near here.

i rang a friend's husband who said it would be the water heater, that it can sometimes run off gas and elec.  my caravan was serviced recently and I wonder if the service bloke left it on gas.?  I have no idea how to change it but have now removed the external
cover which you're meant to do if it's on gas.  Calor bottle still disconnected, will try connecting it again tomrrow.

internet here is rubbish btw so please don't worry if I don't update.

It's a lunar quasar 2012 van btw, if anyone knows how to ensure the water heater is on electricty only I would be grateful.  I can't access the online manuals on the painfully slow internet.

Right so you must have gas combustion somewhere. Assume that now you have turned off/disconnected the gas bottle you are now not getting an alarm?

Correct, no alarm now gas bottle is disconnected.  Friend thinks it's the water heater which he thinks must be switched to gas and not electricity.  Because I thought it was on electricity I hadn't removed the external cover which he says could have been
causing CO to come back into the van.

I don't want to put a spanner in the works but if I try to get the gas water heater working without removing the cover all I get is a red light - and that is in a 2008 Abbey.  My gas heater dial is above the electric heating dial (for gas heating I have to fiddle on the heater itself)  Electric water is in a cupboard.    I hope you are OK tonight Philippa and catch up on sleep!

Philippa I did ask about vent cover, way back in this post.

    hope that is the problem.

be a fault when serviced ?? ) Be CAREFULL !!)

Yeah, sorry John.  Didn't pay much attention at the time as I thought my water heater was on electricty.  I guess it'll be interesting to see what happens tomorrow when I reconnect the gas.  If the alarm goes off again I will disconnect again and keep it
disconnected until I can find an engineer.
