VW Tiguan clutch problems

We have towed a BaileyOlympus 525 never loaded to the MTPLM for about 1500 miles on flat terrain without any problems. The caravan has always been reversed using a motor mover. At the recent service (35,000 miles) the garage said that the clutch is badly
worn and the flywheel will also need to be replaced. They are suggesting that this has been caused by towing. This is our 11th VW with no previous cluch problems. Just wondered whether the car (Match 4motion 140bhp) isn't up to the job. Has any other owner
had  clutch problems towing with a Tiguan, please?
