Storage on roof of van

Hi, not sure if you can tell from my profile picture or have knowledge of these type of vans, but it has a recessed part at the back of the roof with an aluminium bar running along the back edge and on the opposite side it has two aluminium "handles". Interested
to find out what/how these are used or how best to store things there.
