Motorhome mpg....

We have a 2006 Rapido 7099F on a Fiat Ducatto base. It has the 2.8l diesel engine with a 5 speed gear box. The van has done just over 23,000 miles, half of those by us in the 5 years we have
owned her. The engine is regularly professionally serviced.

We love this van. The layout and size are perfect for our needs. The only downside is the mileage we get.

At best on a motorway cruising at about 65mph we get 22 – 24 mpg. Anywhere else we are lucky to get 20 mpg.

The newer models have a 2.3l engine and 6 speed box that I believe can give better than 30 mpg. We can’t really afford to change the whole van for a new one so I have been wondering if it’s
feasible to get the engine & gear box changed for a newer model. I realise that this may also involve changes to the electrics as well.

But is it possible? Would it give the desired mileage? Am I being a complete idiot?

Thanks in advance for your replies, even if they tell me not to be daft.
