When we were down in Cornwall at the weekend, walking on Penhale Dunes and around St Agnes Beacon I was a amazed by the numbers of pairs of these lovely little birds. They are very territorial so it's unusual to se more than a couple of pairs in any area. The males sit right on the top of the bushes - they have black heads with a white ruff round their necks and bright red chests. You will normally spot a female then also in the top of a bush within 5 or 6 metres. Their song is very distinctive - like two pebbles being bashed together - hence the name. if you're in the aea, keep a look out for them.
