Thetford C260 toilet - how remove seat and cover?

I'd like to give the seat and cover of my Thetford C260 cassette toilet a good clean. The user manual states that I can remove them by pushing them together to the right and lifting up, but I can't get this to work. I don't want to force anything. Can anybody
let me in to the secret of how it's done?
