How near to Derby do you want to be? Try Priestfield Grange Farm, Old Brampton, Chesterfield. There are supposed to be a little owl there, and you can definitely hear Tawny Owls every night.

Not sure about CLs but you routinely hear owls at the Carsington Water site which is set in a pine forest near Ashbourne. Used it several times and it's a really nice site with several small pitching areas.

Our CL is 80 miles from Derby, but you might appreciate this video of a fledgling Tawny Owl that one of our guests filmed -

If you fancy travelling a little further afield (2 hours from Derby), down into the Chilterns (Bucks) our CL
Cholsey Grange has owls.  Owls can be heard most nights and there's an owl-box just below the site.  Last year was a poor year for owls, but in 2014 we saw the barn owls flying over the CL as regular as clockwork most
early evenings and even spotted 2 baby owls (fledglings) sitting on the box one evening with one of the parents.  We hope the weather allows them to breed well this year.

There is an owl sanctuary at the Red Lion Farm site in Haughton near Stafford. This is a private site with a tea room on site. The farm makes its own ice cream.

There is an owl sanctuary at the Red Lion Farm site .... ... The farm makes its own ice cream.

This reminds me of reading 'The Gruffalo' poem to my son - it mentions 'Owl Ice Cream' -

"It's terribly kind of you, Owl, but no –

I'm going to have tea with a
    Gruffalo.

He has knobbly knees, and turned-out toes,

And a poisonous wart at the end of his nose."

    "Where are you meeting him?"

    "Here, by this stream,

    And his favorite food is
    owl ice cream
    ."
