Caravan mover motor

My Carver motor mover (single axle) has stopped working and the lights on the control box lights indicated a short. This morning I had it checked out and apparently it is the winding in the motor that is shorting on one side. Finding a replacement is difficult
due to its age and someone suggested I could get the winding rewound. Any ideas, is this possible and cost effective?
