Luxury 4x4 towcars - your experiences

Nigella the Discovery2 is past her best and is to be pensioned off at Easter.

I am not a Kia Sorento person (that's certainly where the smart money goes) so am looking to buy another luxury 4x4. The current short list is: Audi Q7, Range Rover TDV6/V8 (not sport), Discovery 4 TD, Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes ML or GL. All diesels....

This is not just a weekend tow-car, but a luxury hold-all, skip-wagon, business taxi, etc. It will have to do roughly 15/20K miles a year with 5K miles a year towing around europe.

I've run a Disco TD5 for the last 3 years, a Disco 300TDi for the 3 years before and a RangeRover V8 in the distance past.

What are your experiences of the above with regards to reliability in particular?

    I’ve had the chance to try a few luxury 4x4s for towing over the years, and I’d say comfort and stability make a huge difference when you’re pulling a heavy caravan. The Range Rover and BMW X5 stand out for their smooth power delivery and quiet cabins, while the Land Cruiser still feels like the most reliable choice for long hauls or rough terrain. I also found that ride quality really matters when you’re on longer trips a well-balanced suspension makes towing feel effortless. Recently, I came across a travel blog that mentioned how proper vehicle maintenance and route planning can make towing much easier, especially when coordinating long-distance journeys (similar to what’s discussed on this site: https://bnlbostonlimo.com/). Curious to hear what others think about hybrid or electric 4x4s for towing has anyone tried one yet?
