we are new to caravaning and last year was our first year out, we have watched videos and caravan finder for tips and help, on how to prepare your van for the winter, we have been told to move the caravan every couple of months only a few ins at a time as
this helps stop the tires getting tired of being in one place and stops them splitting, anybody else heard that

You might find it easier to put the caravan on axle stands to take the weight off the wheels/tyres. Once done you can easily rotate the wheels which may help keep the wheel bearings free and lubricated in their grease

We move them every month. Stops air bubbles forming. Even if it doesn't, it puts my mind at ease. Plus it allows me to re-bond with my van!Happy

We find the easiest way is just to go out all year in the van. The tyres are then at a different point whnever we get home.Wink

Sound advice, maybe, but I never did that and have lived to tell the tale. Maybe I was lucky but I don’t suppose many others do this, either. I’d only do so if it might cause me lack of sleep or if leaving the van for a very long time.

I do nothing, if set at the right pressure should last winterisation. Assuming you have the right load bearing tyres. Its not a speed rating issue, its a load issue. Make sure the load rating is correct. They are tuff enough .

Tyres (Americans have tires Sealed) can get flat spots if left long enough. As you say, you have the option of moving the caravan a little,
or increasing the pressures also helps ..... but reduce them again for on the road.

I always block mine off for the winter. It's easier than shifting the van back and forth every few weeks.

Agree CY - mine always goes up on axle stands - errr except this year but it is time for new tyres in the Spring.

Tyres can develop flat spots over an extended time, mine is in storage for 5 months and is on axle stands. The compound has cinder down being very irregular in shape and sharp, so long periods of weight bearing probably not good for my tyres.

For short periods of weeks I wouldn't bother.

Even if the tyres should develop flatspots when standing for any considerable length of time, these are quickly ironed out once the caravan is moved again. However, it is still advisable to increase the air pressure to maximum allowable while in storage over winter.

if your caravan is not moved for months, you must use axel stands, failing will result in your tyres cracking

Old thread.  .... but I would certainly be more inclined to follow Lutz's advice .....and shade my tyres from intense sun.
