Nellie.....I'm afraid that the lack of knowledge of cycling, its traditions and its history and what actually goes on 'behind the scenes', actually shows that some of the more recent UK 'fans', lured in temporarily by the Sky money, are the blinkered one.

Tour of Britain--- very poor cycling event. Will never ever match Le Tour or the many other continental cycling events.
Some people might like the TOB, but before decrying Le Tour take a trip to France and watch how cycling events should be organised, then come on here and try and argue that the Tour of Britain is the greatest. I dont think so !!

K we have watched the Tour de France both in France and Yorkshire and also the TOB on two occasions. Clearly the TDF has a lot more money thrown at it, as is evidence by the investment in the Grande Depart, at the start of every stage, and the spectacle
of the caravan. However, to the the average punter and in particular children at the side of the road, mid stage, they appear very similar. Surely what we should be doing is encouraging participation in any sport, not slagging it off as inferior.0 -
Not slagging off, merely putting ToB in context.
Great for the average punter and kids, brilliant.
But to a pro-cycling fan, not into it just cos good old Blightey is going well, it just isn't that interesting.
Anyway, roll on 2019 when the UK will most likely get the UCI World Road Race Championships, a whole week of racing (and disruption) for the host city.
The UCI and pretty much everyone in international cycling will want Leeds to host, but British Cycling will do its upmost to thwart that bid and take it somewhere else.

K, you do exagerate!! No-one is saying that the TOB is the greatest. However it is likely to be the one event that majority of the public are likely to see in the flesh. Without these types of lesser events there would not be any GT riders as it's through
riding in local events that young riders learn their skills and are picked up by teams. How many of the GT teams run their own cycling academies to coach young riders?0 -

We watched Le Tour this year, on the climb to the Ventoux, near Chalet Reynard. Organised? An absolute, complete shambles.
Love Le Tour, but it's far from perfect.
