Caravan spare wheels

Some years ago I had an Avondale Avocet, the spare wheel for which was placed in a recess in the floor of the 'van.  Fortunately, I had no need of it as the 'van did not have a puncture during my ownership.  However, I could not help but wonder at the simplicity
of the idea.  Why sling a wheel underneath a caravan when the only time it will be required is when the 'van is listing heavily to one side.  Crawling beneath the 'van could be messy and unfastening siezed-up fixings to release a filthy wheel could be hugely
frustrating at a time when everyone concerned would be upset.  So, why do caravan manufacturers insist on continuing to mount the wheel underneath the body of the 'van?
