New Awning with Fibreglass frame

We have used a star camp awning with steel frame for over 3 years. The only time we ever had problems with this awning was in windy conditions,  as it was getting a  bit tatty we decided to treat ourselves to a dorema awning with fibreglass frame. Our first
attempted at putting the new awning up took 4 hours, lots of cursing and some minor injuries. The man at the shop said that it was so easy to use fibreglass frames. What did we do wrong.?
