Water heater on the rally field, on or off

Hello, we do a lot of rallying and have a question regarding the water heater in the caravan, we usually just set it up and leave it switched on all the time but a few people have said that their either a) only switch it on when needed or b) switch it on
for an hour to heat the water to start with and then switch it off and back on for short blasts as and when the water in the tank starts to cool down.

what do you do?
