Automatic v manual?

apologies if this has been covered before but I can't seem to find a search facility on the forum. 

I have been driving for about 35 years but never once driven an automatic. Can anyone with experience of both automatic and manual give their views on advantages and disadvantages of both types, in particular when towing.
