Where to put the bikes

We are new caravanning and are picking up our new van in March. We are wondering where to carry our bikes when towing. Do we put them in the van bit worried about doing this in case they damage anything. Do we put them on the back of the car. Do we put
them on top of the car. Do we carry them on the A frame? We have 2 adult bikes. Where do you carry yours?
