For those of you solos that have never done it before, may I recommend a winter sun rally trip to Portugal?   I had heard that one of my neighbours did just that, with his wife, for several
years and after closely questioning them decided that I too would do it as a solo at the age of 70. For the first time I would suggest booking through a club or other camping organisation – that way you get the benefits of an on-site nurse maid should one
be required! (At home we call them Wardens.)

Drove down to Portsmouth to catch the Sunday 22.00hrs sailing which got me into Bilbao at 07.00 Tuesday morning, well refreshed and good for a 480m drive down to Caceres for two nights –
walked into town and enjoyed a day investigating it. On to Albufeira the 3rd day (435 m.) The motorways were fantastic – no traffic, just cruised along at a steady 60mph stopping as necessary en route. By going in early November I missed any adverse weather
– there could be fog, rain, snow or ice in the mountains during December. Motorway tolls set me back about £45.

As most of you know, on a rally we are pretty invisible, in my case the ‘nursemaid’ never stopped by to say hello or to see if I was OK, even though it was known that I was solo but neighbours
were good, unless they made up a group of two or more outfits.

Do you think there is call for a Solo’s winter sun rally and if so where?

I would favour Portugal as most youngsters speak English and getting there can be motorway from Port to site and Sat Nav can be excellent except mine lost me at a vital junction in Bilbao
but I soon found the road to the next town en route.

PS Internet access a bit hit and miss at present. Will catch up with thread when I can.
