Toyota Hilux as a tow car

Hi, i am presently looking at pick up,s to assist with transportation of my dogs. Has anyone towing experience with say a Toyota Hilux 2.5 Diesel.  Interested in both handling, comfort and economy towing.  I presently tow with an x trail and average 26 mpg
towing a swift chalenger 540.
