How best to use a portable solar panel

hi all, we have a small portable solar panel charger  with a 12v plug option, it says on the box its handy to trickle charge our caravan battery whilst in storage, so can anyone advice me, DO I JUST PLUG IT IN MY 12v INTERIOR PLUG SOCKET AND THATS IT oh
and of course place the panel in the sun!!! or do i need to switch the battery charger on from the control panel inside the van, it seems such a good idea I'm sure it cant be that simple, hope someone can advice, happy caravanning  thanks jean
