Winter reading

Whenever I get chance I call into charity shops and buy books to read during the winter months.  Someone recommended Jack Higgins and I've just started reading one.   What a disappointment.  Gratuitous violence, thin story line and reads as if he expected
it to become a film.    What do you like reading and what would you recommend for someone who likes a good mystery story?
