Winterhof hitches

I know this may sound a little crazy but your help would be appreciated! My previous caravan had an Alko hitch which i was used to pushing the handle down after i had unhitched.

I have just bought an Elddis Crusader which has a Winterhof hitch. After we got the van back to the storage yard from the dealer, i found i was unable to push the handle of the hitch into the horizontal position like i could do with the Alko hitch.

Looking at the handbook, it seems that the handle stays in the upright position unless you insert a safety ball into the hitch itself. Am i correct in this assumtion or am i doing something wrong?
