Tinkling/Chattering Mondeo mk 4 Diesel

Has any  Mondeo owner experenced a noise, thats best described as a tinkly or chattery sound when the engine is under load, mainly when towing? If I back of the throttle the noise fades, also there dosn't seem to be any effect on performance. Any ideas?
