Tyre savers or not
Thinking of getting some tyre savers to help with "flat spots"" ! What would you advise!!!

IMHO a better solution is to jack up the van chassis and block it off if laying up for the winter. If in one position for relatively short periods, say a month or less, then, provided the tyres are properly inflated, no harm should come.

Hi Cyberyacht, I inflated the tyres to correct pressure at weekend and will keep a check on them as not using the van now until March. It will be a bit difficult for me to Jack up the chassis and block off as there is no one to help. The only alternative
is the tyre savers.0 -
According to a friend who works in the tyre industry, the tyres will not 'flat spot' if kept inflated to the correct pressures.

I try to move the caravan a quarter of a turn of the wheels if it is not used for more than six weeks to prevent flat spots. No problem so far and in the past I have left it longer. I do know however that the caravan that was next to us in store did develop
them when left for long periods although I am not sure of the exact length of time or the tyre pressures.0 -
I have left all my caravan tyres completely untouched every winter on every caravan I have had since 1964. If any of them had flat spots I never noticed when we went out again in the spring.

Years ago I used to jack my caravan off the ground onto axle stands for the winter months. But over the years the caravans got bigger and I was uneasy about a one and a half tonne caravan balancing in the end of a jack. My solution was to buy a spare set of steel wheels with some cheap tyres and just swap them over winter. We probable do get a bit paranoid about caravan tyres but I was always happier. Now with a motorhome , if its not being used for a month or so, I just take it for a run out every few weeks to keep everything in order which I find much easier and less stressful!!!

I think I must be paranoid being a newbie!! I'll keep the tyres at correct pressure over winter months. Thanks all for comments.

What is the life of a caravan tyre? After how long must/should they be replaced? What's recommended?
Five years recommended with seven as a maximum.

get a pair of winter wheels and tuck your tyres to bed in the garage for the winter - good security measure too!

But, check the insurance if using winter wheels as not all policies allow them.

I too use winter wheels as they save the tyres and are a put off fort any would be thief, and I can't understand why an insurance company would not cover you, especially if you are leaving it on your own driveway. The CC don't allow this I beleive.
