Family holiday in Scotland advice

Hi there, we are a family of 5 with 3 children (aged 9, 7 and 2).  Following an unforgettable experience at the London Olympics where we combined our main summer holiday at Grafham Water CC site, the children are trying to persuade us to visit the Commonwealth
Games in Glasgow next year and have our main holiday in Scotland at the same time.  We've never caravanned in Scotland and I must confess my geographical knowledge is limited too.  We are thinking of using Edinburgh or Strathclyde for the games themselves
but where should we go after that?  As it will be late July / early August, I'm a bit worried about the midges, should I be?  North Ledaig and Bunree look amazing but would they suit children for 10 - 14 nights?  The Ranch and Ayr Craigie Gardens might be
a good base and fewer midges but again, what's the area like?  Or should be plump for the middle (eg: Blair Drummond or The Woods)?  I'd be interested in your advice and experiences.
