ADP. Just spotted your post on the Royal Navy. I would love to agree with you but the words "was" and perhaps "were" seem to be missing.

They are currently more akin to  the "Royal Putaniland Navy"., from the BBC Radio's "The Navy Lark".

That is not intended as a slur to Royal Navy itself or to our sailors, but to our friends in successive Governments who have made such dreadful cuts. Still never mind I expect that our fine sailors are building real muscles trying to propel their rowing boats ever faster.

    Computing - Alan Turing 1940 (ish) :D

Rubbish.  Colossus was designed by the engineer Tommy Flowers to solve a problem posed by mathematician Max Newman at the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park. Alan Turing's
use of probability in cryptanalysis only contributed to its design.

Tommy Flowers spent eleven months from early February to December 1943 designing and building Colossus. He did it at the Post Office Research Station, Dollis Hill, in northwest London. They tested it in December 1943. Then they took
Colossus apart and moved it to
    Bletchley Park.

Charles Babbage early 1600s ( computer ish )

A mathematician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer, Babbage is best remembered for originating the concept of a programmable computer. 1800's I think. Wink

Yes, so you can contribute to the thread.
