Are Battery Compartments too small?

My van is in storage and I went to swap over the batteries. The 110 A/hr battery has a clearance of 1 mm in height and is very tight on depth and width. When I put my spare 85 A/hr battery in it was slightly too deep and I had to force the door closed. Seems
that if I was buying a new battery I would be limited by what will actually fit in the compartment. Of course, having the mover cabling doesn't help, however, it does seem that the manufacturers have just squeezed the space a bit too much. Thoughts?
