'Automatic lights' on cars

In my opinion of all the recent gimmicks dreamt up by car manufacturers this has to be the most useless. To me the value of auto lights would be to avoid people driving in poor light conditions without lights - be seen even if you think you can see!

In reality, as I have learned, the sensors that turn on the lights operate only when it is so dark you cannot see. The first and only time I tried this facility was on a rainy day. I switched to 'auto' while the car faced my garage door where I could see the lights were operating but when I reversed away and drove off, unknown to me the sensor decided the light level was adequate and switched off the lights. Of course then I didn't notice the miniscule 'lights on' warning so I became another car driving along with no lights in poor conditions.

Solution - just ignore the facility and use the standard headlight position or get a Scandinavian specification car and have the head lights on permanently.
