Bulkhead Regulators - all pain, no gain?

So we have been living with the new arrangement for a few years now and we have very expensive and very unreliable bulkhead regulators, costly high pressure hoses that need careful treatment and regular inspection/replacement and expensive pigtail adapters
to fit our chosen bottle. On top of that, if I go overseas and buy a different gas bottle I can easily buy a regulator with it but where do I buy a pigtail in Croatia or wherever? Where's the gain?
