Stability !?

I have always towed with a heavy 4x4 and have never suffered stability problems even during a high speed "Blow Out" in France ( See my Story re Tyron Bands )

But a member of my family has recently changed his van to one of the latest lay-outs with permanent twin single bunks near the rear and with a wash room at the rear.  He tows with a fairly new Volkswagen Passat Estate and is aware that he is over the normal
85% rule.  However he is a very experienced long distance caravaner and the new van has both a winterhoff hitch stabilisor and an Alko Electronic stabilisor as standard.  But he is concerned that this van feels very twitchy and he has already suffered a severe
snake at one point.

I am wondering if the new style layout is partly to blame.  The two single bunks near the rear must be heavier than the normal fiitings and the shorter front seating will have reduced nose weight.  In other words has this design altered the conventional
weight and balance profile?

I am always happier with a fairly heavy nose weight of about 100-110 Kgs but he reports not being anywhere near his maximum for the Passat of 80 kgs. So I have recommended he reviews his loading regime.  Has anyone else encountered odd behavior with vans
with the fixed bedding towards the rear?

A six year old thread has been resurrected. Was it for that purpose?

So I see. I was just about to report but it’s already been taken care of.
