Oradour Sur Glan
Just going through some pictures of our visit to this village about 4 years ago. We had intended to return this year but were unable to go. Did anyone else make it?
For those that dont know, Oradour was a small town a few kilometers North of Limoges in France. On the afternoon of the 10th June 1944 the little town was going about its narmal business, when suddenly all access was cut off and sealed by an SS Regiment on their way North from the Med Coast of France, to the fighting in Normandy after the D day landings.
All the Men in the Town were rounded up and put into 3 barns the Women and Children locked into the Church. Then at 4.00pm a whistle blew and all the men in the barns were machine gunned to death and Grenades and petrol thrown into the Church. Only a total of 4 people from the whole town survived. 1 woman who leapt from the church window and 3 young boys who fell under the bodies of adults as they were gunned down.
The Village was then set on fire! The French Govt decreed that it would never be rebuilt, - but would remain as it was at 8.00pm that night for ever.
It remains a poignant reminder today of mans inhumanity to man.
Did anyone make it to the 70th? Has anyone visited?
