This resort allegedly banned a recently widowed motorhomer from booking in to its site.  (See
here
)

The subject has gone viral.

That is absolutely dreadful.  We stayed a few times at Searles with our grand-daughter some years ago - never again!

Someone has just started another thread about this.

It beggars belief, even if the site normally has a policy in relation to "singles", surely each case should be taken on its own merits.  As if the poor woman hasn't enough to cope with at the moment.  A total disgrace,

Just shows how good teh Caravan Club is. I couldn't see any of our wardens doing that, in fact the opposite to make her safe and secure.

I wonder whether someone could contact the lady and extend a warm welcome to the solos group on here? I would hate to think that she might consider gjving up motorhoming because of the absolutely disgraceful treatment by Searles.

I thought I would go on to the Searles website to look at their T&C's. It very clearly states that single occupancy is not allowed in any circumstances. ( I would be the first to admit that if I was going there it's unlikely I would have read them)  It seems,
reading between the lines, that because of the high number of children on the site at times they don't want to open themselves to possible problems. Clearly they have to apply the rule to both men and women or risk being accused of discrimination. Obviously
this was very upsetting for the lady concerned, especially as it seems she had been there previously with her husband. Perhaps the situation was not very sympathetically put to her by a member of staff but given the clear rules what are Searles expected to
    do?

Personally, whatever the pros and cons of this particular case, I would not want to give a site with that sort of policy business. Presumably they are saying they are not able to police there site to secure the safety of those staying there.

What we don't know is whether there have been problems in the past and their T&C's are just a reaction? I think it such a large site that it would be impossible for the site to police every possible situation which lets face it is really the parents responsibility.
By making my post above I am not defending the content of their T&C's but they do have a right to frame them as they think fit. The poor lady in question, because she had been there before as a couple I suspect never imagined that she would be refused or
perhaps even knew that single occupancy was not allowed. If there is a blame its probably in the way this was communicated by the site or their staff.

Other sites state "no singles or single groups".  As someone who books sites for groups of single campers, mostly older widowed people, this often a stumbling block.  However if I particularly want to be in an area and am finding it difficult to book a site
I have contacted sites direct and they have welcomed us.  This rule is usually only used for younger groups.  I would not like to be a site owner/manager as it is difficult to get it right for everyone.

I certainly won't try to go to Searles!

obviously we don't know all the facts but this doesn't fit our experience.  We have stayed at Searles a few times with Norfolk scout group leaders, a mixed bunch with singles and married people and never had a problem.  Great party time had by all

That would infer that they're not consistent with their T&Cs then.

Unless it is a (very) recently introduced rule.

Surely Searles would have picked up when the lady booked that she was a 'single'?  She would have had to book in her motorhome and one adult.  I would have thought they should have explained their terms and conditions at that point.

A good point, as their online booking form does allow you to only input 1 adult and although the field is highlighted, this only refers to single sex groups of 3 or more. A sight oversight on their part if it is a condition of booking.

One wonders if they are going to face a "test case" brought by Stonewall or some similar group.

I too tried to book at the place. I was refused and referred to item 5 of the T'c and C's. Not too fussed, but note that item 5 refers to their accomodation and not my own van.

It was their suggestive and offensive reply that annoyed me. I emailed back - no reply, so I emailed their directorship team, no reply.

    Their loss.

Also, I challenged them about their single sex booking thing and said what about if me and HWMBO and two friends go. NO, refused. So two gay couples in one six berth van are banned.Yet six members of the Middlesbrough Swingers Society could go in the same
van!!!! (Benidorm, Donald and Jacqueline before anyone takes offence)

I believe the press have got this story now and also TV.

Thank goodness the Camping and Caravanning Club and sites I/we use arent like these people.

The lady in question was in her own motorhome and her two friends were in their motorhome.

I'm still a bit grief struck after losing my mum last summer. Imagine losing your partner, getting used to life on your own, driving a motorhome for the first time, starting to build life again and then you get smacked with this.

Yes David, their T's and C's are restrictive . For example, the article about "professional filming" and cameras near the pool. I wondered whether there had been issues in the past, but even so, how many murderers and child abusers operate as couples - Fred
and rose West, The Moors thing, Soham, the list goes on, so not really an excuse to discriminate against singles, but the way Searle's reply was worded to me was offensive.

BBC Look East carried the story tonight. It is appalling. I went on Searles website and could not find the TandCs. It is plain discrimination and must surely be illegal. A dreadful assumption about all single people.

and as Milliehull picked up on, why wasn't her booking refused when it was first made? Why wait until she has driven all the way from Skegness to Hunstanton. Beggars belief. Worried
