Where to park a motorhome

Although a caravanner we did once hire a motorhome to do a tour and really enjoyed it. We are hiring another one in October and visiting a couple of large cities up north. We are doing one night stops so we need to park the van near the town during the day.
Would you recommend Park & Ride carparks, are they safe or do you have any better ideas. We are visiting Liverpool docks and Newcastle.
