Weathering??!

We recently purchased a brand new awning which leaked constantly on our maiden voyage.  Having now spoken to the dealer he says this is normal? "weathering" apparently? Is he right? surely when you spend a fortune on a new awning you'd expect it to at least
keep you dry????
