Damaged work top

The work top in my caravan has been dented by a cup falling on it, I'm pretty good at DIY but I'm looking for ideas how to cover the dent. I've thought about cutting a hole and inserting a heat proof plate or a chopping board. Anyone got any better ideas, it's not very pleasant to keep looking at.
