Grip treads / anti slip skids

I am of course talking about the things that go under the driving wheels, should you lose traction on mud or soft ground.  They seem to come in two varieties, one being like mini railings of horizontal slats joined by a cord either side and the others are
like hinged skids with a grip pattern embossed on both sides.

Has anyone ever used these things, or had any experience with them?  Is one far better than the other, or are both types crud?
