Hook up at home?

Hi all, myself the wife and the 2 girls are new to this and have just bought our first van. We are lucky enough to have the van on our drive at home, i see lots of other vans parked on driveways and see that most have thier hook up cables connected to the
van permanently. Can anybody shed any light as to why this is done apart from keeping the battery topped up.
